Yoga for Anxiety
Anxiety can go away through pranayama, knowledge, and meditation, and knowing that someone is taking care of you.” ~ Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
How Yoga Heals Anxiety and Stress
Many of us have felt overwhelmed, stressed or anxious at some point in our lives. It seems, in the digital age, that the constant stream of information from our TVs and phones will never give us rest. Our minds move constantly, and finding a quiet medium can seem impossible.
Many of us suffer from nervous system disregulation: you may feel it in the quality of your sleep, a tightness in your chest or a constant sense of fatigue. Your nervous system is constantly assessing your surroundings to protect you, and an information overload sends us into a state of constant overdrive which can seem difficult to overcome. This is especially difficult for those of us who carry trauma; extra steps and precautions are necessary in the way we look after ourselves.
This is where yoga and meditation can help best. Nobody knows our bodies and minds better than ourselves: learning how to harness and soothe both is one of the most important skill sets we can have. Learning how to press the reset button on our nervous systems to calm and repair the body and mind are essential to living a balanced, happy life.
Yoga supports the whole nervous system by introducing balance between body and mind. Yoga regulates the nervous system by calming the stress response and activating the body’s natural self-soothing pathways, teaching the body what safety feels like again. In a world where many of us are living in a constant state of hypervigilance, yoga is about helping the body come out of survival mode and return to balance. It is an opportunity to remove ourselves from life’s many pressures and reconnect with our intuition and inner peace.
Meditation is much the same: it is quieting of the mind and gentle training away from the fraying that we often feel after hours on our phones or in front of the news. It is the opportunity to self-enquire and train ourselves into reducing the constant noisiness of the day-to-day. Meditation is both calming and contemplative: when paired with yoga, they have proven to reduce anxiety over sustained practice.
